Blood donation

Some patients admitted to the ICU require blood transfusions to recover from their illness. Blood can not be produced in the laboratory: humans are the only source for these life-saving therapies.

Blood donation consists of withdrawing a certain amount of blood from a healthy subject, the donor, with the purpose of transfusing it to a subject who needs blood or one of its components, namely red blood cells, platelets or plasma. It is possible to give even just one blood component (i.e. platelets or plasma), for those who have contraindications to donate whole blood.

Being a donor or not is a free choice, and what it implies is a gift. For this reason it is called blood "donation", since it is a voluntary act of generosity, which therefore can not be subject to remuneration.

A Ministry Decree defines the physical requirements to be accepted as a donor, such as certain hemoglobin values, blood pressure, weight and heart rate, in order to protect his/her health.

Blood donation can be done either at the Blood Centers, which in Italy are facilities exclusively managed by hospitals, or in a out-of-hospital collection unit, that can be fixed or mobile, typically directly handled by voluntary blood donor Associations or Federations.
